The Capulets & The Montagues

By Bellini

English Touring Opera 2025.

Director

Conductor: Alphonse Cemin

Design: Lily Arnold

Lighting: Peter Harrison

Movement direction: Carmine de Amicis

Fight choreography: Kaitlin Howard

“Eloise Lally’s production is a bright feather in ETO’s cap. Her approach sheds formalities while steering clear of being another sterile modern reinterpretation — The Capulets & The Montagues is an unstuffy affair with plenty of sprezzatura’ - **** A Young(ish) Perspective

https://ayoungishperspective.co.uk/2025/02/23/review-the-capulets-the-montagues/

“She evokes the mean streets and meaner mobsters of the Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola era with some panache'“ **** The Times

“ This production makes a strong case that this work can provide compelling drama even as it seduces you with the beauty of the human voice. And that’s what real operatic magic is all about” **** Bachtrack

“An extremely stylish production'“ **** The Stage

“They, and Lally, present us with scuffed and shadowed vistas of patriarchy in decay, with the fragile, polished order of the diner gradually engulfed in rubbish and ruin” **** TheArtsDesk

“Don’t let the word ‘opera’ put you off because this performance crosses the boundaries of many different works and whatever your preferences if you love a good story – you’ll love this” ***** Mark Aspen

A Dream of the Past - Opera Scenes

Director

Britten Theatre, Royal College of Music. May 2025

'A Dream of The Past'

Each of these eleven scenes capture a moment in history. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the turn of the 19th century, the common themes of love, lust and greed have been embodied in operatic material, creating a thread which continues to connect us to our own humanity. Our relationship with the past is difficult - existing in a tension between what we know and what we can imagine. This journey through time gives vision to both the stories being told in opera and the context they were written in.

OFFIE NOMINATED - BEST OPERA PRODUCTION & BEST PERFORMANCES 2024

REVIEWS

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “HGO with a talented cast, a tight orchestra and superb direction put on a spectacle in praise of love, joy and a little bit of kinky experimentation.”

“Eloise Lally does a brilliant job of organising 14 people on stage without it ever seeming like chaos and always providing a whole range of expressions and attitudes to watch.”

The Reviews Hub

⭐⭐⭐⭐ “The ensemble company of fourteen young opera singers work tirelessly well together, invested and focused throughout, creating lovely classical tableaux, with each performer getting their chance to shine and sing Purcell’s glorious songs…a vibrant and, yes, charming production.”

The Spy in the Stalls

⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Hampstead Garden Opera (HGO) has entrusted the task to director Eloise Lally and she attacks the piece with wit and verve.”

Plays to See

⭐⭐⭐⭐

“This was a fabulously lavish visual treat – big, camp, joyous and taking no prisoners - and the music was, well, sublime”

Reviews:

‘Katie Mitchell’s production for the Welsh National Opera was first seen in 1998 but has lost none of its claustrophobic power in the hands of revival director Eloise Lally. Dramatic gestures large and small are delivered with care and concision, aligned with the rhythmic subtlety emanating from the pit’

****Steph Power, The Stage

‘Shame flourishes in secrecy. It blossoms in the claustrophobic domestic interiors of Katie Mitchell’s 1998 Jenufa, revived here by Eloise Lally for Welsh National Opera’

****Rebecca Franks, The Times

‘This was a wholly compelling performance from cast, chorus and orchestra alike, embracing such empathy and commitment as to leave its audience deeply moved and more than a bit drained’

**** Rian Evans, The Guardian
